As in any new group, you will hear some terms that you do not understand. Don't be discouraged. As you read the book and continue to come to meetings, you will soon pick up the language, developed by Abraham A. Low, M.D. which we call the "Recovery language." The uniformity of language allows us to attend any Recovery, Inc. group in the world and easily communicate our experiences and symptoms.
Is this a 12 step program?
The model for Recovery, Inc. was developed by Dr. Low, M.D. a neuropsychiatrist and does not follow the 12 steps. Because of dual -diagnoses, some Recovery members attend both Recovery and a 12-step group. Experience has shown that there is no conflict between the two programs.
Are the Recovery leaders mental health professionals?
All group leaders are members of the group and are not mental health professionals. Leaders have all experienced some type of difficulty with mental or emotional problems and are in the process of regaining control of their own lives. They receive on-going leader training and are authorized annually by Recovery, Inc.'s Board of Directors.
Do I have to read when it's my turn?
All participation in the meeting is voluntary. However, you are encouraged to participate but only as you choose to do so.
Do I have to read the book before I can participate?
At least a few chapters. In order to gain an understanding of the Recovery, Inc. concepts, reading and studying the book is just as important as attending meetings.
When can I participate?
When you've learned one or two simple "spottings" from listening or
reading the book you can comment on another person's example. If you want
to try giving an example, the leader can help you with the example structure.
Also feel free to print out the form at the end of the guest track to take
to a meeting, as a guide.
How do I learn to give examples?
The leader will help you, if you like, by reading each of the four steps as you give your first examples. You will also learn by listening to others give their examples.
Can I take notes?
Our policy is to allow note taking only when a taped lecture is played. Note taking during the example portion of the meeting is distracting and may be uncomfortable for the person who has given the example.
Can I talk to someone between meetings?
If you are having difficulties between weekly meetings, the program provides a 'five minute phone call'. The group leader or another veteran member can provide their phone number.
Where can I get the books?
The main text, Mental Health Through Will Training, can be purchased at most meetings. The main text, supplementary books and tapes also can be ordered from the "List of Literature" available at the meetings. Or you can print it out on the web site and contact the webmaster for the publications you are interested in.
What should I donate?
The suggested contribution is two dollars or more per meeting. People give more or less depending on their means. If you cannot afford to give, that's O.K., too. Recovery, Inc. is non-profit. The leaders are all volunteers and the collection at meetings, memberships and sale of literature all go to support our organization.
How many different Recovery, Inc. meetings may I attend?
If more than one meeting is available, you are welcome to attend as many as you like. Each group meets at the same time and place each week. These times are not listed on the web site, because they are subject to change, and also to protect the privacy of the group leaders, who may not want that information posted on the internet.
When can I expect results in my own life?
As you attend and participate in meetings, study the literature and learn to apply the Recovery principles in your daily life, you will begin to see your difficulties in a different light. Everyone of us at the meeting is here because of some problem with anger, fear, anxiety or other difficulty. You will see members in different phases of getting well.
If you have other questions, write them down and we'll discuss them during mutual aid at next week's meeting.
Please remember:
At Recovery, Inc., you will learn that there are NO HOPELESS CASES.
Recovery, Inc. meetings are a SAFE place for you to express your feelings and fears.
The people at Recovery, Inc. meetings have all experienced problems
and are here to help you learn how to apply this method.
As you learn, you will help others, by attending meetings either through
spotting others, or sharing your own example.
That's the way it works!
