FACTS ABOUT RECOVERY, INC.
RECOVERY, INC. IS an international,
non-profit, community-based organization, founded in 1937 by the late Abraham
A. Low, M.D., Chicago neuropsychiatrist.
ITS GOAL IS to help people with nervous
and emotional disorders reduce their suffering and improve their mental
health. Weekly group meetings offer a system of self-help techniques which
members learn and then practice in their daily life.
THE RECOVERY METHOD:
-
was developed by Dr. Low after many years of study, research, and treatment
of patients;
-
of self-help is based on cognitive/behavioral principles;
-
includes practical techniques to help members learn how to identify and
manage negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behavioral habits that
can lead to emotional discomfort and disturbing physical symptoms;
-
explains why worry, anger, and fear can produce tension-related symptoms;
and
-
can be used on its own or in conjunction with professional help or medication.
People who attend Recovery meetings suffer from a wide range of emotional/behavioral
disorders, and the Method is designed to address the symptoms they hold
in common. They often find that their lives are improved by attending our
meetings on a regular basis, studying the Recovery materials, and practicing
the principles in daily life. Many libraries provide access to our literature
or participants may purchase them.
RECOVERY HELPS PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLE WITH PROBLEMS
SUCH AS:
-
emotional pain and distressing nervous symptoms that make it hard, if not
impossible to cope with ordinary tension and strain of everyday demands;
-
nervous symptoms, including headaches, stomach distress; heart palpitations,
dizziness, sweats, low energy, shortness of breath, sleep problems, feelings
of unreality;
-
anger, panic, anxiety or depression;
-
obsessions, compulsions, phobias or disturbing thoughts or sensations;
-
fears of being alone or in crowds of people, traveling, closed or open
spaces, and especially the fear of making mistakes, etc.; and
-
a dual-diagnosis (alcoholism coupled with emotional challenges). Some people
attend both Recovery and a 12-step program without any conflict.
GROUP LEADERS ARE experienced members
trained in the Method who practice and can demonstrate the self-help techniques.
They are authorized annually by Recovery’s board of directors and receive
ongoing leadership training.
MEETINGS ARE ATTENDED BY:
-
adults from all walks of life;
-
supportive adult friends and relatives; and
-
health care providers and clergy persons wishing to observe/attend.
GROUP MEETINGS OFFER:
-
reassurance through meeting friendly people with similar problems
who have found a way to live a more healthy life;
-
understanding of each other’s feelings and struggles;
-
a safe place to voluntarily express feelings and fears without being
judged;
-
acceptance and emotional support that may be lacking at home, school
and work;
-

THE RECOVERY METHOD DOES NOT
replace professional diagnoses, treatment, counseling or medication.
Neither does it offer religious training. People can seek their religious
guidance from another source than the meeting.
